- Just as a 'heads up' to this group, beware that there is a new
- iteration of the USRobotics V34 Sportster on the dealer's shelves which
- is causing considerable headaches for central site host system
- operators.
-
- The "New" V34 Sportster looks the same, but inside it has been
- completely redesigned from the ground up. Gone is the 80188 CPU
- and the controller code is now included in the DSP. The CLUE that
- you gotten hold of one of these brain-dead paperweights is in the
- ati7 screen where the clock speed is listed as being 92 Mhz.
-
- Current production firmware carries a date code of 10-18-95 and has
- many bugs. The biggest bug is a failure to link up at all with some
- host systems and/or linking up without error-control. The bug is in
- their V.42 error control implementation.
-
- These units can be readily identified on dealer's' shelves by checking
- the product serial number on the package end-flap. The units in
- question begin with the serial number sequence:
-
- Externals 00083901 <<-- the 01 is the clue
- Internals 00084002 <<-- the 02 is the clue
-
- The packages also contain the words "Plug-N-Play"
-
- USR is currently working on a firmware upgrade to address many of the
- issues, but for now that firmware is not available. Beware.

- In my opinion: Something else you may want to be aware of Harry....
- The V.34 Sportster which was written up & received such high acclaim
- and rave reviews, and upon which USR Marketing is resting their
- laurels, and upon the strength of which many customers (including you
- perhaps) have based their purchase decision, IS NOT THE SAME MODEM
- being sold in the stores today. Yes, the familiar green & white box
- is basically the same, with a few new feature stickers emblazoned upon
- it, and the modem -INSIDE- the packaging certainly looks exactly
- identical to prior units, but that's where similarities end. If
- you'll open the case (2 screws on external models) and compare what
- you bought TODAY to that which was on the shelf a mere six months ago,
- you will discover that indeed there are "numerous differences." In
- summary, the "new" V.34 Sportster has been completely redesigned with
- an all new circuit board and an extensive list of different
- components, most of them now from Southeast Asia source suppliers
- where before the bill of materials consisted largely of USA and Japan
- source components. Alas, it is not the Sportster which the testing
- labs and magazine reviewers tested, and moreover, it is not working
- especially well in some applications (as you and others are beginning
- to notice).
-
- Trust in the knowledge that USR engineering is well aware of the "new"
- Sportster's several anomalies, though as you've discovered, their tech
- support of their low-end products does leave room for improvement.
- Also, beware that their low-end tech support "teledroids" are NOT
- AWARE of any of the known, documented problems, nor will they become
- "aware" until such time as a FIX is in hand. This is routine at just
- about all technology products manufacturers. No sense admitting fault
- until you've got a fix, lest the customer demand a refund.
-
- Still and all, when shopping low-end-priced products, don't the bottom
- feeders always seem to sort to the top? The V34 Sportster is
- currently BLACKLISTED in my MIS department. It's the second time in
- as many years that we've had to issue "stop order" bulletins for this
- product.
-
- Since the manufacturer chooses to continually tamper with a working
- and proven design, all in the focus of reducing an already miniscule
- bill of materials and thus cost to manufacture, it is my opinion that
- the product is unstable and unworthy of any consideration, regardless
- of the intended application. They don't even make a good wheel chock
- for heavy trucks.
